At last week’s National Coalition for Homeless Veterans annual conference, HUD Development Secretary Shaun Donovan and HUD Secretary of Veteran Affairs, Eric Shinseki, reported that HUD will be awarding $60 million to fund 9,000 new vouchers for homeless veterans nationwide. The vouchers will provide permanent supportive housing to homeless veterans. The new vouchers are a step towards Shineski’s goal to eradicate homelessness among veterans by 2015. There is currently an estimated 60,000 homeless veterans in the United States.

In Vermont, the announcement of 20 new HUD-VASH vouchers brings the number of vouchers up to 140. The vouchers are administered in Vermont through a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Vermont State Housing Authority.

“WASHINGTON – Approximately 20 homeless veterans living on the streets and in shelters in Vermont will soon find a permanent place to call home. U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Eric K.
