New HUD Housing Market Profile of Burlington and S. Burlington

The Housing Market Profile for the Burlington-South Burlington, Vermont metropolitan area is now published in HUD’s U.S. Housing Market Conditions. Please note that there was an editors’ mistake.  The population listed in the report should read as the Decennial Census population for the area as of April 1, 2010. For a brief description of the results, read below.

The profile talks about shifts in the area’s population, job market and housing market. HUD reports that the number of home  and condominium sales are rising above the 2009 levels, but are still below the 2004 levels. [More ...]

HUD awards $450,000 to two Vermont organizations

“The US Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $450,000 to two Vermont organizations to educate the public and combat housing and lending discrimination in the state, one to Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity for $125,000 and the other to Vermont Legal Aid Inc of $325,000. Nationally, HUD awarded more than $40.8 million to 108 fair housing organizations and non-profit agencies in 36 states and the District of Columbia.  This year’s award represents a $13.2 million increase over last year’s award and includes $10 million to fund activities that address lending discrimination, including mortgage rescue scams. New HUD Regional Administrator

On Feb. 21, Secretary Donovan appointed Barbara Fields as the new HUD Regional Administrator for the New England region (see HUD press release below).  She replaces Richard Walega, who recently resigned.  As many of you know, Barbara has been heading up the LISC Rhode Island office since 1991.  She has been a great supporter and active member of CHAPA for many years and we look forward to working with her in this new position.

Federal Policy Update

Fiscal Year 2011 started October 1st and the Government is running under a Continuing Resolution until December 3rd. U.S. Congress adjourned from the last session without passing any budgets. They will come back for a one week Lame Duck Session November 15th to address several budget items. They will then recess until December. Although overall budgets improved from last session, there is tremendous pressure from congress to further reduce the budgets. Vermont awarded nearly $1.5M to create sustainable and livable communities

In an unprecedented collaboration between two federal agencies, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) are working to stimulate a new generation of sustainable and livable communities that connect housing, employment and economic development with transportation and other infrastructure improvements. The joint HUD-DOT funding will support local and regional partnerships seeking to create a more holistic and integrated approach to connecting affordable housing, job opportunities and transportation. VT receives 250 Housing Choice Vouchers from HUD

Vermont received 250 housing choice vouchers (HCV) from HUD’s Rental Assistance for Non-Elderly Persons with Disabilities Program. These housing assistance vouchers  aid in enabling persons with disabilities to access affordable housing. Barre Housing Authority received 50 and Vermont State Housing Authority received 200.
