NROC Hiring a “Green” AmeriCorps Member

Northgate Resident’s Ownership Corporation (NROC) is hiring for an AmeriCorps State member to begin service around Aug. 26th, 2011. Please share this member position opening with anyone who may be interested.

Northgate Residents’ Ownership Corporation

This position is part of the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board AmeriCorps, which places AmeriCorps members in sponsoring non-profit affordable housing and environmental conservation and education organizations around the state.

Northgate Residents’ Ownership Corporation is committed to permanently affordable housing, led by its residents, to foster, a safe, strong, and diverse community.

This AmeriCorps member will work with Northgate Residents’ Ownership Corporation’s (NROC) ‘Green’ Committee which promotes policy and activities that lower energy costs and reduce environmental impact at Northgate.  The ‘Green’ AmeriCorps member will implement educational campaigns and provide activities for youth and teens around environment and energy.

Essential Functions:

  1. Commitment to resident involvement and ‘Green’ initiatives

  2. Support the efforts NROC’s ‘Green’ and Shared Green Spaces Committees

  3. Promote best energy efficiency and sustainable natural resources practices

  4. Provide sustainability programs and events for children and teens

Marginal Functions:

  1. Promote youth and teen leadership of ‘Green’ initiatives

  2. Provide waste and energy reduction workshops and awareness campaign

  3. Create outreach and education material for young gardeners

  4. Partner with local organization working on environmental and energy issues

Desired Qualifications:

  1. Excellent written, interpersonal, and group communication skills

  2. Excellent organizational skills and initiates work independently

  3. Computer experience with e-mail and word processing

  4. Basic knowledge of energy reduction and gardening practices

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Be US citizen (or have permanent resident status; call with questions about this);

  2. Be at least 18 years of age upon entering the Pre-Service Orientation (there is no upper age limit), or 17 years of age with written parental permission that has been verified by phone;

  3. Be a high school graduate or have a GED certificate, or be willing to work towards their GED as part of their service-year successful completion requirement.  (A member cannot have dropped out of high school to join AmeriCorps.  If a member has a documented medical reason/professional opinion why they cannot finish high school, they might be eligible.)

  4. Be committed to the VHCB AmeriCorps program, and its ethic of service and personal and professional development of its participants;

  5. Have the ability and enthusiasm to drive to, attend, and participate in required trainings and events, and be prepared to drive 2-3 hours each way.

Service Condition

This position will work indoor and outdoor and begin in Sept. 2011 and end in Aug. 2012.

This position is Half Time: Requires 900 hours for an average of 20 hours per week for 11 months. Member will receive a living allowance of $7,254 (pre-tax), and an education award of $2,363 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of service.  Other benefits include health insurance, federal school loan forbearance, and various training opportunities.
