In 2003 when Home Share Now, formerly Home Share of Central Vermont, first opened its doors it was a slow start. While home sharing is a logical and efficient use of underutilized resources, the idea of sharing a home with a stranger can be daunting. Thanks to the pioneering team that brought home sharing to central Vermont, a process of highly personalized due diligence has resulted in hundreds of healthy, positive home sharing matches.
Twelve years later, the independent non-profit has hit a milestone—supporting over 100 people in home sharing matches in one year. In 2013 Home Share Now matched 61 people; in 2014 the number jumped to 82 people; in 2015 the number is 106 with another two and half months left in the fiscal year
The current mission — cultivating matches for home providers and home seekers to expand the possibilities for living — means extra income for home providers, reduced rent for home seekers, enhanced sense of community, nursing home delay, respite for adult children caring for aging parents, and at-home, non-medical services.
Home Share Now has been facilitating home sharing as a safe and affordable housing option and currently serves Washington, Orange, and Lamoille counties and some adjacent towns in Caledonia, Orleans, and Windsor counties. To date, Home Share Now has interacted with over 4,000 people and enrolled over 1,000 of them.
Home Share Now’s service package includes the assistance of highly skilled mediation services as a component of every match. Matched home sharers report they feel more financially secure, are less lonely, they sleep better and feel safer, and they are happier thanks to home sharing.
