VT Affordable Housing Issues in the News

Feb. 2, 2011: Erhard Mahnke and Kenn Sassorossi guest hosted Channel 17′s Housing and Communities Show on Town Meeting Television. They talked about recent affordable housing issues currently on the radar in Vermont, including Wharf Lane & Bobbin Mill. They also discussed the Mickenberg Commission review of the statewide housing agencies that occurred this past year.

Housing Groups and Pizzigalli Craft Deal to Preserve Low-Income Housing

6a00d83451b91969e20133f1f48f49970b-320wi “On the day they were supposed to receive eviction notices, the 44 residents of Wharf Lane were handed much better news: A deal has been struck between two nonprofit housing groups and the building’s owner that will keep their apartments as subsidized, affordable housing.

“We announced to the residents that we had a deal, in principle, on both Wharf Lane and Bobbin Mill and expected to sign purchase and sale contracts early next week,” Paul Dettman, executive director of Burlington Housing Authority told Seven Days.

BHA is working with the Vermont Housing Finance Agency to purchase Wharf Lane and the nearby Bobbin Mill apartments, which is home to more than 100 people — many of them low-income families. [More ...]

Negotiations to purchase Wharf Lane have turned around through great efforts of the tenants and local advocates. It looks as though Burlington Housing Authority will go ahead with the purchase of the apartment building, preserving the affordable units and allowing the residents to remain in their homes. Residents of Wharf Lane Apartments in Burlington are working together to save their homes from being sold to a commercial developer.  The building, owned by Pizzagalli Properties, is home to 44 low-income renters, many of whom are elderly or have disabilities.

The apartments were built 30 years ago by a private developer using HUD funds. The contract, which expires in 9 months, specified that after 30 years as low-income housing, the property could be sold at market rate. [More ...]
