A new fact sheet published by the Alliance entitled What is “Sustainable” Housing Cost Burden? Implications for HPRP shows that high housing cost burdens are common among those living in poverty. In fact, more than half of households living in poverty pay more than 50 percent of their income toward housing costs. This finding has significant implications for providers of homelessness prevention and rapid re-housing services. Some providers have chosen to screen out potential recipients because of concerns about future cost burden, but analysis shows that, even with high cost burdens, households in poverty can avoid homelessness. The analysis concludes that these households should be served with prevention and rapid re-housing resources even if it may result in them continuing to have a high housing cost burden in the future.
