New Report: Unaffordable Housing and Local Employment Growth

Abstract

High housing prices have caused concerns among policy makers as well as the public in many U.S. regions. There is a general belief that unaffordable housing could drive businesses away and thus impede job growth. However, there has been little empirical evidence that supports this view. “The recent economic crisis has led policymakers, researchers, and advocates alike to ask: how many people are homeless due to the recession? In response, the National Alliance to End Homelessness is releasing a series of briefs on various economic indicators and their relationship to homelessness.

In this first in the series, we focus on the phenomenon of “doubling up.” Doubling up is defined in this brief as an individual or family living in a housing unit with extended family, friends, and other non-relatives due to economic hardship, earning no more than 125 percent of the federal poverty level. “The Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R) at HUD is seeking suggestions for research to be funded in FY11 or in the coming years.

A new page on Huduser.org, the website that PD&R uses to distribute its research, provides links to current research and to HUD’s strategic plan, which lays out the department’s goals that PD&R’s research is intended to serve.
