“The recent economic crisis has led policymakers, researchers, and advocates alike to ask: how many people are homeless due to the recession? In response, the National Alliance to End Homelessness is releasing a series of briefs on various economic indicators and their relationship to homelessness.
In this first in the series, we focus on the phenomenon of “doubling up.” Doubling up is defined in this brief as an individual or family living in a housing unit with extended family, friends, and other non-relatives due to economic hardship, earning no more than 125 percent of the federal poverty level.
