“WINOOSKI — Two years in the making, transitional housing for homeless veterans officially opened Monday on Canal Street.

Though veterans won’t start moving in until next week, the Committee on Temporary Shelter and Housing Vermont held a ribbon cutting in the five-story building to mark the end of construction. The two organizations formed a partnership to establish the housing. [More ...]

A Plan to Make Homelessness History

“This is a story about a plan to end chronic homelessness in the United States. It’s not an indeterminate “war on homelessness,” but a methodical approach to do away with a major social problem. Each day, roughly 700,000 people in the country are homeless. About 120,000 are chronically homeless. They often live on the streets for years and have mental disabilities, addiction problems and life-threatening diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes. They are also five times more likely than ordinary Americans to have suffered a traumatic brain injury, which may have precipitated their homelessness. Without direct assistance, many will remain homeless for the rest of their lives — at enormous cost to society and themselves. [More ...]

National Alliance to End Homelessness Launches Youth Site Visit Campaign

On Wednesday, September 15 at 2 p.m. ET, the Alliance will host a webinar to kick off a campaign to encourage Members of Congress to visit local programs serving youth either experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The webinar will include an overview of the campaign, as well as suggested strategies for getting Members of Congress to accept an invitation to visit a program and see first-hand how it affects youth experiencing homelessness in their districts. The 2009 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress

The total number of homeless persons in America dropped slightly between 2008 and 2009, although the number of homeless families increased — almost certainly due to the ongoing effects of the recession. HUD recently released these data as part of The 2009 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress — the fifth in a series that provides both snapshots of homeless persons on a given night in 2009 (usually at the end of January) and a year-long assessment.
