NDD United has extended the deadline for the February sign-on letter to February 10th to allow for more groups to join in the fight to protect nondefense discretionary investments. While there is no shortage of threats to the programs we all care about, the number of threats to funding for those same programs continue to grow in this new environment. This can be seen in the President’s choice of Rep. Mick Mulvaney, a strong proponent of cuts, to head the Office of Management and Budget and in the President’s “Penny Plan” that would further deteriorate the NDD budget. In addition, the President’s request for increased budgets for defense begs the question of where they will cut to offset those increases.
They invite all national, state, and local organizations to join the list of attached organizations in signing this letter urging Congress to protect NDD programs from further cuts and to end sequestration. To sign, click here and complete the form.

On January 24th, homeless service providers across Vermont conducted a one-night census of the homeless population in our state. Each year, the Vermont Coalition to End Homelessness organizes the Point In Time Count of the Homeless. This HUD-mandated count is an effort to survey the state of homelessness in Vermont for state and federal policymakers, as well as to raise awareness about how far we have to go. Cathedral Square Corporation (CSC), a nonprofit organization that develops and manages affordable senior living communities, today received a $625,000 award from the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board (VHCB) to help fund a new, 39-unit residence for seniors in South Burlington’s new city center. CSC is partnering with Snyder Braverman Development Company LLC to develop the project on Market Street.
CSC Chief Executive Officer Kim Fitzgerald called the VHCB award “a critical piece of the financing puzzle” needed for City Center Senior Housing, which will provide service-supported homes for 39 senior households. The development will be mixed income, providing affordable and market-rate homes for elders. The vacancy rate for rental housing in the Chittenden County area is approximately 1 percent, which makes finding affordable housing extremely difficult for seniors of modest means, she added.

From VT Digger: Phil Scott seeks a $35 million bond to allow the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board to build new homes for low-income and middle-income residents.
Jen Hollar, the policy director for the board, said some of the housing would be for families earning up to $84,000, and other housing would serve low-income, homeless and potentially homeless Vermonters.
Hollar said it is too early to tell how many housing units could be built with the $35 million, but she said the board would seek federal funding and leverage the state money to raise private capital.

Just hours after his inauguration, HUD issued an order to suspend the reduction of Mortgage Insurance Premiums. This suspension does not come as much of a surprise, as President Obama had ordered a second reduction of these premiums just days before his second term concluded.
Ben Carson, the Trump administrations presumptive Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, said that the Trump administration plans to “really examine” the Obama administration’s decision to cut FHA premiums before determining a course of action.
